A Race Against Venom

At 2:00 a.m., beneath the quiet skies surrounding the Ngorongoro Crater - where wildlife roams freely and tourism sustains the livelihoods of thousands - Amani was jolted awake by a sharp strike on his shoulder. A chef at a remote lodge in the heart of the wilderness, he looked on in shock as his colleagues switched on the light and saw a black-necked spitting cobra slithering out of the room, leaving fresh bite marks on his shoulder.

Knowing every minute mattered, his colleagues remained calm. They kept Amani as still as possible, administered appropriate first aid and immediately began the nearly two-hour journey to FAME Hospital. Upon arrival, the emergency team quickly assessed him and administered snake antivenom before placing him under close observation.

"Snake venom doesn't stop acting after the bite," explains a FAME emergency physician. "Some snake venoms can cause death within hours—and in severe cases, even sooner—if appropriate treatment is not provided immediately. Others continue to damage the body as time passes, leading to life-threatening complications. Every minute counts. Early treatment with the correct antivenom can mean the difference between life and death."

Amani remained at FAME for monitoring for the next two days as doctors ensured the venom was neutralized and no complications developed. By the third day, he was back on his feet with a smile. A week after discharge, he returned for follow-up blood tests, which confirmed he had made a full recovery.

Amani's recovery was made possible not only by the swift actions of his colleagues but also through the support of our partner, @pflasterfuertansania, whose investment in training FAME healthcare providers and supplying lifesaving snake antivenom has strengthened emergency care for communities across northern Tanzania.

Today, Amani has returned to the kitchen, once again providing for his wife and two daughters. His story is a powerful reminder that access to timely, specialized emergency care close to home can mean the difference between life and death - ensuring that people living in Tanzania's remote communities have a chance to return to the lives and families waiting for them.
